JANDITA CONIL is an education project based on active pedagogies which was created by a group of families with diverse backgrounds living in the area of Conil de la Frontera and Vejer de la Frontera. These families had a common dream and shared the goal of creating an environment of respectful childrearing for their kids, from 3 years old onward.
Since 2013, Jandita has been growing and it has moved progressively towards a community-type project, a space that fosters personal growth and which also enhances parents development. The fact that Jandita is a self-managed project contributes to this ongoing personal evolution as it addresses many challenges such as: managing coherency between school and family values, reaching consensus and agreements with peers, encouraging active listening and communication skills, improving the ability to work horizontally... Indeed, working together for the wellbeing of our kids and the school has a wider and deeper impact on the “Jandita community”. In fact, as Jandita school has been growing up and strengthening, a network of mutual support has spontaneously emerged and developed; a network which today improves and nourishes the lives of all members of the project.
The day-to-day life of the kids at Jandita school is organized within a cooperative atmosphere, alternating individual work in well prepared environments with group work including varied workshops, field trips, gardening work, etc. During these last few years, Jandita has created and consolidated an educational dynamic mostly based on the Montessori method and curriculum. In addition, the school finds a great source of inspiration in other alternative pedagogies that prioritize the respect for the individual need, pace of learning and interest of the child, for example: Waldorf, Reggio Emilia, Democratic Schools, or the incredible work developed by Rebeca and Mauricio Wild.
The project aims at caring for the children in a comprehensive and multidimensional way, accompanying their physical, emotional, creative, and psychosocial development. Children are empowered by a school environment that encourages autonomy and self-motivation, whilst ensuring respect for each other’s learning pace and interests. Working in assembly is important at our school and it emphasizes other aspects of child development, such as the ability to take decisions with peers and within large groups, conflict management, the ability to listen to others and to express their own feelings and needs while taking into account the needs of others, etc.
From an organization point of view, Jandita is an association and it uses the sociocracy management tool, which is a governance system for decision-making based on consent. It is an effective tool to reach common aims and maintain a horizontal type of system while ensuring efficiency. Therefore, it allows the collective intelligence to have an impact on how the group develops a shared vision, mission and aims.
