Gandara offers a space where children can fully develop, where we respect children's individual rhythm and value nourishing relationships among all the participants.
Our project grew out of the need to create a learning space for our own children, a space that could be shared with other families and individuals who are interested in "learning through doing" - what we call "active learning".
In our centre, students cab choose what they wish to learn, as we understand that each individual is responsible for their own learning process, and we trust the natural forces within each child as the engine in his/her growing process.
Gandara's prepared environments try to satisfy the child's needs at various levels: physical, intellectual and emotional. We base our work on the respectful pedagogy practised by Mauricio and Rebeca Wild in the Pestalozzi school (Ecuador) for over 40 years, and which has been recorded in Rebeca Wild's books. Another great influence on our project has come from the work of Tinus Wijnakker and his team in Alavida, an active school in Madrid.
The Gándara team is a group of professional teachers and individuals with other backgrounds - such as arts and music - who are deeply involved in an ongoing process of personal growth both at the individual and collective levels. They have all done training in active listening, non-violent communication, and respectful pedagogy, as well as in the Montessori method.
We are committed to a big change in education, as we believe that is precisely through education that we can create a better world for all of us.
